Today I would like to tell you about one of my favourite producers – the Pujol-Izard domain.
Located in the Aude commune of Saint-Frichoux, the estate spans 20 hectares in the Languedoc region, and more precisely in the Minervois sub-region.
The domain’s history goes back to the late XIXth century, and still continues today thanks to Jean-Claude and Yves Pujol, two passionate brothers who, thanks to the precious help of their thoughtful father Louis and children Emmanuel and Stephanie, have kept it alive to this day.
Advocating an eco-friendly approach to agriculture, the team has committed to comply with High Environmental Value (HEV) regulations for its 2019 harvest. According to the Pujol family, “a new approach whereby viticulture is reconciled with nature needs to be created”, beyond the various measures and certifications already in place. For them, this involves adopting a “good father” behaviour, with older generations passing on the land to their children, wishing them many more happy and fruitful harvests!
Below are some of Pujol-Izard’s finest cuvees:
Les Capitelles 2017 - Carignan, Grenache, Merlot and Cinsault - A pleasant nose of blackberries and spices, and flexible and soft tannins in the mouth.
Heresis 2016 - Malbec, Syrah, Carignan, Grenache and Caladoc - This bottle will lead you to unconventional notes where spices and fruits mingle in a suave complexity. Traditional vinification and ageing separately in oak barrels for 12 months and then blended in the vat before bottling.
Saint-Fructueux 2014 - Syrah, Grenache & Mourvedre - An intense nose with a perfume of black fruit preserves (cassis, blueberry), forest senses (Cistus, Cade, sage), Mocha roasted and nice wood. The mouth is round and structured by deep tannins. Flavours marked by morello cherry, black liquorice, ginger, and wood.
La Mitre de l’Eveque 2015 - Syrah & Grenache - This confidential cuvee is made of the best selection of ripe grapes. Intense colour, loud in the mouth with a long duration. Powerful and structured. Simply exceptional.
